Audi launches aluminium five-cylinder engine

The new Audi RS 3 at the Paris Motor Show is said to be the most powerful five-cylinder engine used a series production Audi.

The 400PS, 174mph RS 3 makes history as the first saloon in the brand’s history to use a transversely mounted configuration for its engine, which is a seven-time winner of an ‘International Engine of the Year’ category award.
The new 2.5 TFSI delivers 400PS and 480 Nm (354 lbft) of torque, available at engine speeds between 1,700 and 5,850 rev/min. Such firepower allows the compact RS model to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds.
Audi claims the car can achieve a maximum speed of 155mph but, upon request, Audi will increase the electronically limited top speed to 174mile/h. T
With its light-alloy crankcase, the five-cylinder engine is 26 kg lighter than before. It employs a dual injection into the intake manifold and into the combustion chambers, and uses the Audi valvelift system for variable control of the exhaust valves.
The car has S tronic seven-speed dual clutch transmission to transmits power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Its electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch distributes the drive torque variably between the axles.
Wheel-selective torque control, an intelligent software feature of the Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), rounds off the work of the all-wheel drive.
Based on Audi’s figures, this engine has a specific output of 160 bhp/litre and 192 Nm/litre in specific torque.
Meanwhile, the latest Audi Q5 has the 2-litre TDI engine producing 190PS. Soon after launch, a 2-litre TFSI engine will also be available with an output of 252PS. Audi claims this car will return up to 41.5 mile/gal combined, which equates to 154 grams CO2per km. The also intensively revised 3-litre TDI, coming at a later date, increases output to 286PS with 620Nm (457.3 lbft) of torque.
